Indonesia

I was in a Reiki session once when, out of nowhere, the word “Indonesia” came to me. I don’t know if it was some kind of message from beyond or what, but right then I decided I was going to visit. Looking back, it feels fitting — Indonesia really is magical, and this trip ended up being one of my favourite trips of my life.

Indonesia took me through four very different places, each with its own personality. Here’s where I went — click on each destination for the full guide:

  • Bali — the jungle, the temples, the volcano, the coffee made from poop
  • The Gili Islands — no cars, stunning water, great place to meet people
  • Labuan Bajo & Komodo — Komodo dragons, Pink Beach, and the best beach I’ve ever seen
  • Yogyakarta — Borobudur at sunrise, a driver named Tugi, and sweet potatoes I still think about

When to Go

I went in August, right in the heart of the dry season. Sunny days, low humidity, ideal conditions for everything. I think it’s one of the best times to visit Indonesia — the weather is reliable and you can do all the outdoor activities without worrying about rain.

  • The Gili Islands, Indonesia

From Bali, I went to the Gili Islands — about a 2-hour speedboat ride. There are three islands: Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, and Gili Meno. I chose Gili Trawangan because it’s the most touristy of the three, with the most options for hotels and bars, and you can easily visit the other two by boat…

  • Yogyakarta, Indonesia

I flew from Bali to Yogyakarta. Most people go just for Prambanan and Borobudur, but it has a lot more to offer than that. Yogyakarta is one of the most culturally rich cities in Java — very different from Bali, which is predominantly Hindu. Here the culture is more conservative and traditionally Islamic, which is…

  • Hong Kong & Macau, China

I liked Hong Kong much more at night than during the day. At night, you get to see beautiful things — the skyline from Victoria Peak, or the sunset from Sky100 Tower, with the lights making the city look like it’s three times the size of New York. There’s also Temple Street Market, which comes…

  • Bali, Indonesia

Bali was my first stop on this trip through Indonesia. At the time, I travelled from Argentina — 36 hours, on my own. It was my first solo trip that far, my first time travelling alone all the way to Asia. People can say “wow, you’re going to Bali alone, that’s so far,” but honestly,…
