Peru & Bolivia — Adventure Through the Andes

This trip was one of the best of my life — and Peru was the star of it. Ancient civilizations, impossible landscapes, an oasis in the middle of a desert, floating islands, and mountains that make you question everything your lungs are capable of. Bolivia was part of the route, and it has its own unique things to offer, but if I’m honest, Peru was where my heart stayed.

I travelled in June, which turned out to be a great time — warm enough to be comfortable, and perfect weather for walking and hiking.

I used Peru Hop to get between destinations in Peru, and Bolivia Hop to cross the border and continue through Bolivia. Both are hop-on hop-off bus services designed for travellers, and they made the logistics incredibly easy.

Here’s where I went — click on each destination for the full guide:

How Long Did I Stay?

Just over two weeks. It was the perfect amount of time — the only thing missing was Uyuni. That one’s still waiting for me.

I visited Lima twice — once when my flight was delayed and I had an unexpected layover, which I used to explore the historic centre, and once intentionally, arriving two days early before starting my Peru Hop itinerary. Cusco is one of those cities that hits differently. The former capital of the Inca Empire, sitting at over 3,400 metres above sea level, with colonial Spanish architecture built on top of ancient Inca foundations. Natal and Pipa are both in the northeast of Brazil, and they’re very different from each other. Natal is a city where you need to be careful with safety, but it’s a good base for doing a lot of excursions. Pipa is a small beach town with a quiet kind of magic to it —…

  • Puno & Lago Titicaca, Peru

Puno sits on the shores of Lake Titicaca — the highest navigable lake in the world, at 3,812 metres above sea level. I want to say this clearly: Puno surprised me. It’s so much more beautiful than it looks in photos. And the Uros floating islands were one of the most extraordinary things I’ve seen…

  • La Paz, Bolivia

La Paz is the administrative capital of Bolivia and sits at 3,600 metres above sea level — one of the highest capital cities in the world. I only had one night there before heading home, but I made the most of it. Time of Year I Visited I went in June. It was warm —…

  • Huacachina, Peru

Huacachina was the reason this whole trip started. I had seen a photo on Instagram — an oasis in the middle of massive sand dunes, surrounded by a small town — and I said to myself: I’m going there. That one photo sent me to Peru. And honestly? One of the best stops of the…
